Overkill - An Avalanche of Unnecessary Care

05.11.2015 - Healthcare Quality

Atul Gawande has another GREAT article in the New Yorker - this one on the cost and pervasiveness of over treatment.  His suggestions for addressing this issue is:

1 - Strong primary care that prevents the need for specialty services, (such as the Primary Care Medical Homes being developed here in Wyoming) and,
2 - Centers of Excellence to perform the specialty services when needed but that are just as likely to tell the patient they don’t need surgery but instead need less intrusive, less risky help.

I highly recommend this article.
